“In the art of peace, a single cut of the sword summons up the wondrous powers of the universe. That one sword links the past, present, and future; it absorbs the universe. Time and space disappear. All of creation, from the distant past to the present moment, lives in the sword. All human existence flourishes right here in the sword you hold in your hands. You are now prepared for anything that may arise.”

“The primary thing when you take a sword in your hands is your intention to cut the enemy, whatever the means. Whenever you parry, hit, spring, strike or touch the enemy's cutting sword, you must cut the enemy in the same movement. It is essential to attain this. If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him.”

Had fun reading at Cellar Door Books for their Open Mic night on Saturday with a few other writers. I read the prologue from my work in progress, Legacy of Traydus, about prehistoric elves and dragons. I have posted it to my blog.
I was not disappointed with Left Hand of Darkness. I've got to figure out how to work the Earthsea series into my reading list soon!A review by Charlie Jane Anders:

The Hogwarts Board of Governors just isn't providing adequate oversight... This is a scandal of the highest order:http://petewharmby.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I watched Ender's Game with a bunch of 8th graders (i.e., 13 year olds) and a couple other parents. The first thing we talked about when the lights came up was, what are they going to do for a sequel?More thoughts on my blog:

John ScalziI especially encourage you to tip your hat to the newer nominees in the genre, because that tip of the hat can be both meaningful and useful to them. I’m a fan of making people aware of the next generation of the genre and the excellent writers in it.
Scalzi is nominated for the Goodreads Choice awards, but he has asked that we NOT vote for him. He gives a number of reasons, and closes them out with the statement quoted above. I think that's an awesome thing to do.
