Edgar E. "Abe" Martin, the artist for the comic strip "Boots and her Buddies," left Monmouth (Illinois) College in his junior year to enter the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago. After leaving art school, he obtained a job with the NEA (Newspaper Enterprise Association) Service and drew several comic strips before the big idea for Boots came in 1924. In the early days, Boots was a pacesetter for fashions of the day the strip had such a large following among students that Martin sometimes made personal appearances at proms.
