Mel Pennant

Mel Pennant is an award-winning playwright whose work has appeared in the National Archives, as well as on stage. Born in London, she was raised by an extraordinary village, which included her Jamaican grandparents who moved to England in the 1950s as part of the Windrush generation. Mel is drawn to stories that explore what’s hidden below the surface and celebrate the richness and strength of tight-knit communities. She lives in London with her family and their dog, Bleu. A Murder for Miss Hortense is Mel’s first novel and she is currently writing another mystery novel starring Miss Hortense.

“The following morning Blossom sat at the back of the church with a pounding headache. It was from all the thinking, plus the singing and the tambourines.”
Mel Pennant, A Murder for Miss Hortense

“Bola bit down hard on a piece of celery: she hadn't been this entertained since O.J. decided to drive away.”
Mel Pennant, A Murder for Miss Hortense

“Oh, it was true that right at that moment, if looks and wishes could kill, Miss Hortense would have killed that ignorant, flat-bottomed, Small Island, false-smiling, butter-wouldn't melt, fake-pearls, goat-mouthed woman a thousand times over. And enjoyed every moment.”
Mel Pennant, A Murder for Miss Hortense
