“A geological core is obtained by drilling into the earth with a tube so that the inside of the tube gets filled with the material that is being drilled. When the drilling tube is removed a rod-shaped mass of material called a “core” can be obtained and in this core the part that was drilled closest to the surface of the earth will have remains from recent days while the deepest part of the core near where the drill went deepest will have remains from many thousands or even millions of years ago depending on how deep one drills.”
