“We may feel trapped between our need to take care of ourselves by going to our doctor’s appointments and our body’s heightened sense of uncertainty, disgust, or alarm at the prospect of being in the situation.”
Jamila Dawson, With Pleasure: Managing Trauma Triggers for More Vibrant Sex and Relationships

“For folks who are inclined, pleasurable sex and orgasm can also help minimize stress and anxiety, while instilling a sense of bliss or peacefulness. Almost anything that engages one or more of our senses—taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight—in positive ways can invite the myriad perks of pleasure.”
Jamila Dawson, With Pleasure: Managing Trauma Triggers for More Vibrant Sex and Relationships

“If we practice moving toward our body’s distress, however—meaning noticing our body’s reactions, taking them seriously, and working with our body, not against it—we give ourselves a better chance of mitigating or reducing distress or harm to ourselves or those who love us.”
Jamila Dawson, With Pleasure: Managing Trauma Triggers for More Vibrant Sex and Relationships

“People who cling to their illusions find it difficult, if not impossible, to learn anything worth learning: a people under the necessity of creating themselves must examine everything, and soak up learning the way the roots of a tree soak up water.”
James Baldwin

“In my case, I think my exile saved my life, for it inexorably confirmed something which Americans appear to have great difficulty accepting. Which is, simply, this: a man is not a man until he is able and willing to accept his own vision of the world, no matter how radically this vision departs from others.”
James Baldwin

“The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers.”

James Baldwin

“I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am also so much more than that. So are we all.”
James Baldwin
