Vidyut Bhagwat has taught Literature, Linguistics and Women’s Studies at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for more than two and half decades. She is the founder director of the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Women’s Studies Centre, University of Pune, from where she retired in 2008. Much of her research emerges from an explicitly stated commitment to bringing the complex category of region to the centre of historical, literary and gender studies. Teaching in a State University, she has been involved in designing and conducting innovative teaching programmes in gender studies; and courses on Indian Society, Globalisation and Social Justice for international exchange programmes. Several of her projects on translation seek to open new ‘dialogues’ across different linguistic and institutional locations. She has written and published extensively both in English and Marathi on broad-ranging themes including social movements, social history of medieval and modern Maharashtra, feminist literary studies, feminist thought and theory. She is the recipient of the prestigious ‘Samajvidnyan Kosh Puraskar’ in 2004-2005 for her book Stree Praschnachi Vatchal and the ‘Maharashtra Saraswat Puraskar’ for the year 2006.
