A cozy, heart-warming, simple story (with a few plot holes/conveniences!), that reads more like a middle grade/young teen book than an adult historical fiction. I enjoyed it well enough though.

My history with this book:
We studied it in high school (for GCSE), and I remembered very little about it other than that I was utterly bored. But in recent years I've wanted to reread it, to experience it as an adult and see what I think of it now. I

Robert Macfarlane's writing is wonderful as always. This is not just a book about rivers, but about the different people he spent time with along the way, and about what it is that makes a river alive and the importance of keeping it so (for both the ...more

Interesting collection of classic sci fi short stories. All dated in one way or another of course, and liked a few better than others, but it was fun to spend some time in space from a '40s-'60s era perspective! ...more

I did not receive an advanced copy of this book - it is in fact already released, first published 30th April - the published date on Goodreads of July 2026 is incorrect.

I have been looking and looking. Then we got wrapped up in the holidays.....and January has been tough.....I really want to talk to you. There is a chance that my son and I will be in England in late March to Early April or September/October time. What's the best way to reach you? I can't message you privately here.

Lizzie Hi Lori, I sent you a message, did you receive it?

I was listening to the audiobook and tbh I just wasn't getting into it, I found it too dull, rambling inner thoughts of the narrator... I also felt very uneasy reading it, knowing that it was going to get quite dark etc. I have way too many other more fun books on my TBR! Never read it in school, so I did feel like I 'ought' to, but.... i decided nope not right now!

Lori Wilen I see you abandoned The Handmaid's Tale. Makes me even happier that I deleted it from TBR shelf and all other bookshelves. I think I would have let like I was back in Ms. Hayes' english lit classes in high school.
