Cool Machine by Colson Whitehead

I love Colson Whitehead and love this series. This one felt a little slower and more introspective than the first two, and it dragged in places for me. Not much, just a little here and there. Still, Ray Carney is a tremendous creation and it's imposs ...more

Citizen Vince by Jess Walter

Jess Walter is a national treasure. That is all.

Minor Characters by Joyce Johnson

I liked this more than I was expecting to. Johnson is an interesting woman, more interesting in some ways than the famous men around her. She has grit and perserverance while Kerouac and the others surrender to their appetites.

Black Water Rising by Attica Locke

Not bad, but kind of all over the place. There's Civil Rights Era flashbacks, a big longshoreman's strike, the Houston oil industry, plus another half dozen minor sideplots. Locke brings it all together at the end, sort of, but it's a lot for one boo ...more

I truly loved the first three quarters of this book, before it faded in the last lap. I love the New Yorkness of the book and also that it's a book about a woman's unapologetic hungers. The young woman in the book just wants to eat the world - food, ...more

I'm mystified by the mixed reviews on this book. I've been a little disappointed by Rachman's other books, which have been uneven at best, but this is a small piece of perfection - funny, charming, and smart about people and the newspaper business. R ...more

Brightness Falls by Jay McInerney
Brightness Falls
by Jay McInerney (Goodreads Author)

By the end, McInerney made me feel some sympathy toward his hero Russell Calloway, which is a feat, since Calloway is insufferable - smug, pretentious, avaricious, weak-willed. When I first read this book 25 years ago, I think I envied the characters ...more

Fugitive Days by Bill Ayers

One of the weakest of the many memoirs and histories of Weatherman. If you're looking for an up-close-and-personal memoir of Weatherman and the Ayers-Dorhn family, read the recent memoir by Ayers' son, Zayd Ayers-Dorhn. It's just a better book in eve ...more

Almost a Family by John Darnton

The author's brother, Bob, was a close friend of my father's, and I have met the author myself, so I was perhaps more interested than some might be by the sections on his family. I had heard a few of the stories, but obviously not all of them, and fo ...more
