Creative Demons and How to Slay Them by Richard Holman

This was a fun way to tackle the psychological obstacles we face on the creative path. It was quick, lighthearted and, for me, compulsively readable. It isn’t a deep dive into each creative “demon” but gives the reader tips on ways to reframe and the ...more
Nicole Miles is on page 139 of 176 of Creative Demons and How to Slay Them: Some stories to elucidate the concepts seem a little shaky. I know the story about Cecilia Giménez gained a lot of notoriety but I thought many of its funny/punchline elements had been shown to be incorrect. So you really have to focus on the point of the example rather than its accuracy. But still enjoying it.

Groucho Marx
“From the moment I picked up your book until I put it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.”
Groucho Marx

P.G. Wodehouse
“London was too big to be angry with. It took no notice of him. It did not care whether he was glad to be there or sorry, and there was no means of making it care. That is the peculiarity of London. There is a sort of cold unfriendliness about it. A city like New York makes the new arrival feel at home in half an hour; but London is a specialist in what Psmith in his letter had called the Distant Stare. You have to buy London’s good-will.”
P.G. Wodehouse, Psmith in the City

Sylvia Plath
“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Joseph Conrad
“Since I had peeped over the edge myself, I understand better the meaning of his stare, that could not see the flame of the candle, but was wide enough to embrace the whole universe, piercing enough to penetrate all the hearts that beat in the darkness.”
Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness

William Shakespeare
“My salad days,
When I was green in judgment: cold in blood,
To say as I said then! But, come, away;
Get me ink and paper:
He shall have every day a several greeting,
Or I'll unpeople Egypt.”
William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra
