There were some genuinely helpful takeaways—particularly the concept of categorizing what you can't control into the “let them” group, and what you can or should control into the “let me” group. However, I found the fairytale ending problematic. It f ...more

Captivating. Thrilling. Intriguing. Morbid. You jump in feet first and take off running like you are in pursuit of the facts from page one. Cheering on Agents Kane and Kang with every turn of the page. So glad I was given the opportunity to read t" Read more of this review » |

Maybe my expectations were skewed by the enthusiasm of the friend who recommended it—an ardent Bourdain devotee. The book felt a bit overrated. While I did find some of the behind-the-scenes revelations genuinely intriguing, I was also taken aback by ...more

This book had me LOL right from the self-effacing introduction. The author tried (unsuccessfully) to use reverse psychology to get me to stop reading the very book he wrote - which I just couldn’t put down – tsk tsk, Mr. Corten! It didn’t work! Corte ...more |

“In my next life I want to live my life backwards. You start out dead and get that out of the way. Then you wake up in an old people's home feeling better every day. You get kicked out for being too healthy, go collect your pension, and then when you start work, you get a gold watch and a party on your first day. You work for 40 years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You party, drink alcohol, and are generally promiscuous, then you are ready for high school. You then go to primary school, you become a kid, you play. You have no responsibilities, you become a baby until you are born. And then you spend your last 9 months floating in luxurious spa-like conditions with central heating and room service on tap, larger quarters every day and then Voila! You finish off as an orgasm!”

I cannot get to sleep tonight. I toss and turn and flop. I try to count some fluffy sheep while o'er a fence they hop. I try to think of pleasant dreams of places really cool. I don't know why I cannot sleep - I slept just fine at school.” ...more Kathy Kenney-Marshall |

“It may well be that we will have to repent in this generation. Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, "Wait on time.”

“Mario, what do you get when you cross an insomniac, an unwilling agnostic and a dyslexic?"
"I give."
"You get someone who stays up all night torturing himself mentally over the question of whether or not there's a dog.”

“There was always time to hold someone's hand or listen to their worries or offer a shoulder to cry on because in the blink of an eye you could be on the other side of that conversation. After all tragedy didn't discriminate, so everyone was subject to the same whims of fate. No matter what your skin color was or how much money you had, whether you were gay or straight or an Atheist or a true believer, from where she stood everyone was equal. And loved by someone somewhere.”
