Born in the UK, I’ve been a consultant in environment, sustainability and climate change since 1990 and been involved in environmental protection and campaigning since 1978. At last count, I’ve worked in twenty-eight countries for governments and many industries. I have a degree in civil engineering, an MBA, an MSc in environmental technology from Imperial College, London, and professional qualifications in environmental and greenhouse gas management.

I have many interests stemming from the many influences over my life. From a young age I’ve loved nature and wildlife. My father’s front line experience throughout World War Two, as well as my own travels, led to an interest in modern history. I have many interests stemming from the many influences over my life. From a young age I’ve loved nature and wildlife. My father’s front line experience throughout World War Two, as well as my own travels, led to an interest in modern history. The turbulent 60s and 70s, and being an exchange student in the US during Watergate, led to my interest in politics. Growing up in Swindon, once a great railway town, and seeing express trains screaming through, like fiery dragons, in the last days of steam, turned me into an incurable trainspotter.

I’ve had a long love affair with music. My much older brother, John, introduced me to early rock n’ roll even before the amazing music explosion of the 1960s. John’s LP of Walt Disney’s Fantasia introduced me to classical music. I joined a local choir and have been a choral singer ever since, including over two hundred performances with the London Philharmonic, London Symphony and other orchestras under many of the world’s greatest conductors. John’s recordings of The Goon Show triggered my lifetime love of comedy. My English and Irish heritage and worldwide travels led me to seeking out the pubs and beers of the world.

Since 1999, I’ve lived in Western Australia and helped raise a family—the best thing I’ve done—and have travelled and worked throughout Australia, appreciating its beauty and diversity. I’ve been involved in many campaigns there, including ending the logging of the ancient forests of the south-west and whaling in the Antarctic as well as working towards climate action. In this, I’ve observed Australian climate politics with a mix of amusement and horror. You couldn’t make it up.

The Fossilarchy is my first solo novel. My first novel, The Seventh Boat, co-authored with David Ashbridge, is about whaling in the Southern Ocean and is an Amazon eBook. ...more
