Leta C. Palmiter is an accomplished and highly qualified educator with extensive experience in reading interventions for students with reading disabilities, dyslexia, curriculum-based measurement, data-based individualization, and intensive intervention. Palmiter is currently serving as the Executive Director of Illuminations Center for Dyslexia in Meridian, Mississippi, and also as a National LETRS Professional Learning Facilitator for Lexia Learning, Inc. Palmiter holds an Education Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership from William Carey University, and studied Special Education for students with high incidence learning disabilities at Vanderbilt University in the doctoral program. Palmiter's professional experience includes working as a Professional Learning Facilitator at Lexia Learning, where she has delivered more than 125 professional learning sessions, trained in 11 states and 75 districts, both in-person and virtually. She is also the Founder of Illuminations Center for Dyslexia, where she developed in-school, after-school, and summer programs in reading, math, and art, and partnered with local private schools to provide therapy services at their locations. Palmiter has personally taught over 500 students how to read, write, and spell with confidence. She has also served as a Research Assistant in the Department of Special Education at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, an Adjunct Professor at the University of West Alabama, a Professional Development Leader at the East Mississippi Center for Educational Development, a Mentor Teacher at South Choctaw Academy, and a Special Education Teacher at Southeast Elementary School, among others.
Palmiter's outstanding academic and professional achievements have been recognized through various honors, such as the Promise Grant Scholar at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, a U.S. Department of Education grant recipient, and her publication of the book, "Mississippi Rising: The Story of How the Last Became First in Literacy Growth" in 2022. She has also presented several papers and conducted workshops, including "Mississippi Rising and How to Change the World," "Structured Literacy: An Evidence-Based Practice," and "Parent Advocacy for the Child with Dyslexia," among others. Palmiter has taught many undergraduates and therapists in training how to teach reading using structured literacy methodology.
Palmiter is currently developing software to solve the puzzle of decodable text with individualized curriculum harnessing the power of Generative AI. She lectures on ChatGPT and its implications for teachers, instructional strategies, and the larger landscape of education. Using the power of this cutting-edge technology, Illuminations is creating tailored instructional materials to target interventions, and streamlining teaching processes, irrespective of traditional or remote settings.
