Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun (1580 - 1656) was a Scottish politician and courtier, known as the historian of the noble house of Sutherland. He was a son of Alexander Gordon, 12th Earl of Sutherland and his wife Jean Gordon, Countess of Sutherland.

In 1603, Robert and his brother Alexander obtained permission from James VI and I to travel in Europe. They spent two years on the continent, studying at the universites of Paris and Orléans, a Protestant academy at Saumur on the Loire, and at Bourges.

On returning to Britain in 1605, Robert Gordon became a Protestant and a strong supporter of the Union of the Crowns. He spent the winter in Sutherland, before travelling south in 1606 to join the court of James VI and I as a Gentleman of the Bedc
