“This is how history is fabricated: a leading scholar makes claims, then others come after such a scholar and cite him, repeat the claim one after the other, and hence a claim, however fanciful or just a pure invention, becomes a historical reality.”

“French acts in Algeria had all an intellectual foundation. Whether colonization itself, the mass removal of Algerians, destroying traditional Algerian society, and whatever was done by the French on the ground came as a result of intellectual labour or output that gave legitimacy to such acts. It is a systemic mistake made by scholars today to separate the two (intellectual legitimacy and the use of force), for intellect comes prior to the act of violence, invites it or calls for it. Then, of course, once the act of violence had taken place, there comes again intellect, under the guise of the historian of today this time, who cleanses the blood trail.”

Colonization did not take place earlier than 1830 because there was British-French rivalry on who deserved the prize and under what conditions, and more importantly, what to do if the Ottomans intervened. However, once the Ottoman navy was crushed at Navarino (October 1827), the fate of Algeria was sealed.609”
