Joseph Jackson is a social studies teacher by day and a fly fisherman the rest of the time. If he’s not on the water, he’s either pining for it or writing about it. He’s been published widely in the fly-fishing magazine world, where he and his wife, Emmie, also feature much of their photography. He lives in Anchorage, Alaska but part of his heart will always belong to the Wyoming he grew up in. He was last spotted at a gas station somewhere in the Last Frontier with a fly rod sticking out the back window. "It’s Only Fishing" is his first book. ...more

"Grew up with Joe. Was happy to see he's a successful author now! Enjoyed this one, in spite of not reading much about fishing or Alaska. Neat."

“These are the stones that become diamonds, the plans that don’t pan out but become something else, something better. Eventually they stack up and form a season—a season just like this one—and then before you know it those seasons pile up to become a life, and one worth remembering.”
Joseph Jackson, It's Only Fishing

“Watching sockeyes flow upriver like spilled paint has to be one of the most quintessential Alaskan things you can do (short of watching northern lights or riding in a dog sled, maybe), and I could’ve sat there and done it all day if there weren’t more streams to fish.”
Joseph Jackson, It's Only Fishing

“Then one day it happens. You feel the change, usually before you see it. Light receptors in the buried recesses of our brains sense the shifting angular quality of sunlight, our inner ears throb under new barometric pressures, and our collective psyche takes on an urgency that we can’t explain. The forest turns dark and bare, the streams thin, the coyote’s mangy summer coat grows thick as a mop, and we see reflections everywhere in a desperate land hanging on for dear life.”
