Born and raised in Southern California, Gerald B. (Jerry) Derloshon started surfing in 1963 and continues today. He was one of the U.S. Navy’s youngest weekly newspaper editors when, at 21, he served as a journalist on active duty at the Naval Air Station, Kodiak, Alaska in 1971. “We put out a weekly newspaper, edited the AP Wire for a live nightly newscast, and delivered the news and sports to an audience of Kodiak Island residents and servicemen and women stationed at the base. I think there were more bears on the island than TV viewers,” he said.
