If they are repulsive, threatening, distant, or downright difficult-then they are surely God’s test. God is challenging me to find Him in this or that person, and when I do, everything changes. For all the loftiness in which we shroud God and His presence, He is to be found in our humanness-our shared humanity-and that’s the miracle. That’s the part which eludes us and that we have such trouble comprehending. No one individual or group or congregation can claim God as theirs. He exists in all people of faith and trust. He can be found and spoken to simply by opening our hearts to all of humankind without conditions. And in the act of doing this, we find God.”
