Kerry Rose Carman (nee Dawson) was born at Wellington New Zealand where she trained as a primary school teacher. She met her husband Len Carman while at Wellington Teachers College. Following their marriage the Carmans both taught in Auckland and then the Wairarapa, where they raised a family of four children. She recalls a fascination with the natural world from a very early age and became a keen gardener in her early twenties. Apart from her passion for plants, sketching and the domestic arts, her interests include research, music, history and antiques. In recent years she has gathered a museum quality collection of antique toys, dolls and childhood memorabilia and has done associated research and conservation work for museums.

A serious spinal injury forced her retirement from teaching at the age of 34. Over the next few years as a bed-bound invalid, she wrote and illustrated diaries of her environment; family events, pets, garden and the natural world. This led to the publication of her first book, Portrait of a Garden, which won the A.W. Reed Memorial Award in 1983, ran two editions and became a NZ gardening classic. She subsequently wrote and illustrated three more books; The Creative Gardener, Emily's Garden: The NZ Garden of a Suffolk Lady and Unfolding Seasons. After the death of her husband she became garden columnist for The NZ Listener for 15 years and she has contributed to many other magazines and journals, including HORTUS (UK) and more recently The Gardener's Journal.
She was invited to become a founder member of The Society of Botanical Artists (London), won a Qantas Media Award in 1995 for an environmental column in The NZ Listener and in 2004 was made an Associate of Honour of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture.
She is also the breeder of the Wylde Green Cottage range of violets. She continues her work in this field at her new home, Wyldewood in Masterton, where she also breeds hellebores, primroses and galanthus; and continues her work in collecting and preserving heritage plants.
