“Dialectic, she says, describes the rational discussion between those who hold conflicting positions, to find resolution and deduce the truth through the disciplines of logic and reason. Rhetoric, meanwhile, is the art of persuasion. It makes use of invention, arrangement, delivery and style.
Therefore, can the delivery and style of rhetoric take precedence over truth?”
Mandy Hager, Heloise

“She sees afresh how knowledge feeds the soul and how minds laid open to well-crafted words grow richer; and she sees that, given the chance, the only limits to complex understanding are those imposed by lack of opportunity and damaged self-belief.”
Mandy Hager, Heloise

Topics Mentioning This Author

“A very, in a sense, terrifying aspect of our society, and other societies, is the equanimity and the detachment with which sane, reasonable, sensible people can observe [war]. I think that's more terrifying than the occasional Hitler or LeMay or other that crops up. These people would not be able to operate were it not for this apathy and equanimity...and therefore I think that it's, in some sense, the sane and reasonable and tolerant people who share a very serious burden of guilt that they very easily throw on the shoulders of others who seem more extreme and violent.”
Noam Chomsky
