Cope was a scholar, English professor and author. Considered an expert in Renaissance literature and drama, he also was an acknowledged authority on the works of John Milton, James Joyce and Robert Coover. Before studying at the University of Illinois and Johns Hopkins University for his degrees in English he was a prize fighter and served in the Air Force.
