“Now I always looked after myself in between raves. I would eat properly, watch my alcohol intake and catch up on my sleep because that’s when you heal and grow. I’d dance non-stop for eight hours with my jaw aching from incessantly chewing gum. Connecting with the music was central to my experience. The stimulants I took helped me in this process and when the rave was over and the back to mine at someone’s house had reached that stage of looking for crumbs of coke on the carpet I knew it was time to leave.

“Like it or not drugs are part of life and what’s more they always have been. [here he quotes ancient use of various drugs] … There are lots of reasons why drugs have been outlawed, controlled, and their use prohibited. Safety is one. However, ironically, this could be tackled better if they were regulated and their responsible use accepted rather than being vilified. Being a parent I worry about their availability and of addictive legal highs like spice and a seemingly endless range of cheap designer drugs. The ongoing popularity of ketamine I’ve always been uneasy about.”
