Wow, that's a depressing start to a book I'd heard interesting things about, and that won a major genre award. I hope for everyone's sake it picks up once the novel gets going, because I didn't make it more than a few scenes in.

Hey, this is really good! It's great to see an author have a good idea, and execute on it successfully. That sounds like a low bar, but it's surprising how few authors can manage it!

On my second read, it holds up just as well as when I read it in 2009. It's not perfect, and some of the characterisation isn't satisfying, but what it gets right is so good that it's still a five star book. Or a 4.9 star book at least.

Peter Given all your dilligent reviews over the years, including of Reynolds' novels, I'll share this video with you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bd7H... Reynolds, Vernor Vinge, Karl Schroeder and Charlie Stross at a public panel.

Probably not. Nobody has yet convinced me it's worth the time.

I just found a list of Naval Science Fiction http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/31...

I guess it really is a thing. Not that I'd put Ender's Game in there, as that novel at least attempts to come up with a new analogy for space battles rather than doing everything possible to construct a world onto which the tactics and command of 19th century naval battles can be mapped exactly.

Otto Hello Luke. Podcast-listener here. I really enjoy SFBRP. Your passionate British accent and your love for sci-fi shines though. You have inspired me to read more science fiction because till recently I was only into fantasy.

Thank you for becoming goodreads friend.

Austin Hey Luke! See you're reading The Hobbit. So sorry. Read that for a Sci-fi/Fantasy lit class in college and could barely finish it.

Have you given Metro 2033 a look? It's a russian post-apocalyptic science fiction number. Real bleak. You'd love it.

Keep up the good work!

P.Q. Glisson Hello Luke!
Thanks for wanting to become my friend. :)
Please take a moment to check out my debut novel, Her Sanctuary which is doing quite well and is available at many bookstore websites including amazon.com where you can "look inside" for a sneak preview.
Please feel free to peruse my profile and see what I'm currently working on.
I look forward to exchanging book recs with you and chatting about, oh, I don't know, whatever comes to mind. :)
Thanks again! Her Sanctuary by P.Q. Glisson

Jay Daze Hey Luke, I'm a long time listener (or at least I've listened to all the SFBRP pod-casts) and finally have gotten around to 'friending' you. Thanks so much for your reviews. They're always thoughtful, passionate and entertaining. Completely agree with your review of Sawyer, except for the last part. I have to live in the same country as the guy, that should be punishment enough -- don't make me read him!

Tamahome Starshipsofa twittered a 45 min interview with Alastair Reynolds. Guess what, he likes Book of the New Sun, but Schismatic is a favorite (around 19 min in). http://bit.ly/9DoPeq
