“She felt... how life, from being made up of little separate incidents which one lived one by one, became curled and whole like a wave which bore one up with it and threw one down with it, there, with a dash on the beach.”

Oliver Eade 'Five Lamps and other Stories' is a collection of short stories by a single author that take the reader on a journey through time (from Biblical days via the Napoleonic period to World War and later) and place (including Liverpool, The Holy Land, San Franciso) and are linked by a gentle humanity. The writing is clear and unencumbered, allowing the warmth of human emotions to show through. Short stories are like snapshots of life, and these stories are snapshots that can be looked at again and again. Also, they form a taster for Gigi's Guardian, a novel by the same author. A white-haired gent like myself should not be into chick-lit, but this one most definitely is; with four granddaughters he has has to be. And chick-lit with a touch of fantasy is even more me. After finishing these stories, the reader will get the chance for 'more' from Michele McGrath's novels!
