His appointments include: Assistant Professor of History, 1967-1971; Associate Professor of History, 1971-1978; Professor of History, 1978-1994; Chancellor Professor of History, 1994-1999; William E. Pullen Professor of History, 1999-2004; William E. Pullen Professor of History, Emeritus, 2004.
