I have SO much to say about this book. Most of it bad.

I first read this series 10 years ago and LOVED it, but I stopped 2 books before the end cause I didn’t want it to be over, and I loved not knowing what happened.
I recently reread it (I’ll review I have SO much to say about this book. Most of it bad.

I first read this series 10 years ago and LOVED it, but I stopped 2 books before the end cause I didn’t want it to be over, and I loved not knowing what happened.
I recently reread it (I’ll review the other books when I can), I and just finished the last one today. There are so many things I want to comment on, I’ll list them by category.

Format: Every other book has been a clever mystery all in first person. Why’d Harris change to intervals of 3’d person to show the bad guys doing their stuff? Zero mystery for the reader. We knew exactly what was happening all along, and that took all the surprise and guesswork out of it. Laaaame.

Plot (SPOILER): It was a good idea but with one very loose end. I get that Niall has his fairy ways, but why the hell wouldn’t he at least warn Sookie that the traitor was coming back and was free in the human world? Naill would have had to know his offspring would come straight after Sookie in revenge, especially tortured and bitter as he was. That was a very disappointing plot hole.

HEA (SPOILER): I didn’t figure out until the book before this one who Sookie would end up with. And at first, I really liked it, I have to admit. Sam was perfect for her in almost every way, and we already knew he was always into her. But was she into him? She wondered if their good hookup was due to the cluviel dor... does she actually like him? It's right back to the beginning of the series, then, when he asked her out. And that kind of ruins it for me. More on that in a second, but there were also some things that didn’t make sense. Eric made Sam vow not to court Sookie, but after Bill spilled the beans, suddenly Sam was free to go after Sookie? No more being weird? His distance was the biggest mystery for the reader in the book, with an unsatisfactory conclusion. Apart from that, I hated that Sam and Sookie had nearly no TIME together.

SAM (SPOILER): We didn’t get to see them fall for each other, not even a little bit. They only had one love scene, hurriedly and terribly written, and then she wanted to go slow. Go figure. And Sam didn’t totally sound like himself. I felt epically ripped off. I’m glad she gets to have kids, be out in the sun, everything that she seemed to want, but again, how can you settle for a FRIEND when you just lost the vampire you LOVED? Sam is a great guy. I like him a lot. It was so cute when he said, “I don’t want you grateful. I want you mine.” Probably my favourite line of the book. But it's always been a one-sided thing, as far as I'm concerned. And I didn't see anything change.

Sam Pt 2 (SPOILER): She was hardly with him at all in this book, and during other books they had moments, those instances (kisses, jealousy) seemed to come from him rather than from her, so I wasn’t even aware that she wanted something more with him, and now suddenly it’s like he’s the only thing she’s ever wanted, and I wasn’t buying it. It felt forced. Fake. I wished there was more foreshadowing or tension in the air so that it didn’t feel so abrupt: Eric leaves and BOOM, she’s head over heels for Sam and not sad at all. Doesn’t she miss her vampire lover? The vampire world? Her previous life? Anything? At the very least, I wanted an epilogue of her and Sam’s lives together after. Their love should have built up way more slowly. Flirting on both sides. Them connecting during the last three books (AT LEAST) when Eric was distant and busy and Sookie and him were hardly even together. Harris had so many opportunities to make Sookie & Sam shine, to make us fall in love with THEM, cause obviously we're all in love with Eric, and supposedly, so was Sookie. So how's she all of a sudden so happy with Sam?! Lame.

Eric (SPOILER): It was WAY TOO FAST. After seeing Eric with Sookie for how many books, it was whiplash to have him disappear almost without a word. One one hand, I do love the fact that he left her for riches and a pretty deader, since for once, a book portrays a realistic situation of a guy being selfish and not changing. He wanted Sookie as a vampire or he didn’t want her at all, and I thought that was great. Finally a “bad boy” who stays bad. I like that, sad as it made me.

Eric Pt 2 (SPOILER): But I also think it went against his character to get with the vampire queen as her slave, basically. Sidekick. Whatever. He didn’t have the independent power he’d always been into. Everyone knows he liked to be the big fish in a small pond. What happened there? Why would he give that up for 200 years and lose Sookie forever (whom I’m sure he was certain he could have convinced to change eventually). It just didn’t add up. Also, we only ever heard from HIM that he didn’t previously know about the arranged marriage. Amelia seemed to think he did know. I would have liked to know which one it was, since it would make more sense that he lied to Sookie, knowing he was going to be given to another. But either way, I do miss him, and I’m sure Sookie did, too. Damn sexy Eric.

Bill (SPOILER): This is just a preference, but I kind of wish Sookie had had that revenge sex with Bill that she briefly considered right after Eric unmarried her. Just to spice things up. Bill was out of the picture romantically for so long, that that would have been an unexpected and appreciated flame. Especially considering that of the Supes, Bill really did love her the deepest and purest, despite his initial deception. He was the best one of them all, even if I always liked Eric more (bad boys—what can I say). I do wish we would have heard from him at the ending. If he’d had a conversation with Sookie when he knew she was gone for good, with Sam. To know how he felt. To know what happened to him. To know in the epilogue if he ever got over her. Maybe tried things with Karin. But nope—nothing.

Conclusion (SPOILER): All in all, this is still pretty much my favourite series ever because of the realism. The character, Supes or human, all feel straight out of real life. You can identify with them. It’s not corny. People die and break up. And that’s what I’ve always loved about it. Her ending with Sam had potential, but it needed a ton more buildup and could have been delivered SO MUCH BETTER. Which is why I feel sad and empty at the end.
