DAVID MARTELO nasceu em Viseu, a 11 de Dezembro de 1946. Ingressou na Academia Militar, em 1963, licenciando-se em Ciências Militares, ramo de Infantaria. Entre 1967 e 1972, cumpriu duas comissões de serviço em Angola. É diplomado dos cursos "Infantry Officer Advanced Course", da Escola de Infantaria do Exército dos EUA (Fort Benning), Curso Geral de Estado-Maior e o Curso de Estado-Maior, do Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares. Em 1995, a seu pedido, passou à situação de reserva, após o que encetou a sua actividade como escritor e conferencista, privilegiando o debate dos temas de defesa contemporâneos e a história militar.
