Debra McKinney is co-author of “Beyond the Bear: How I Learned to Live and Love Again after Being Blinded by a Bear,” the story of how Dan Bigley put his life back together after a devastating bear mauling at Alaska's Russian River in 2003. The book, co-authored with Bigley, was published by Globe Pequot/Lyons Press in 2013.
McKinney is a fourth generation journalist, born into a family tradition that began when her great-grandmother, Emma C. McKinney, bought the Hillsboro Argus in Hillsboro, Ore., in 1904. Her great-grandmother, grandfather, W. Verne, and father, Walter V., are all members of the Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame.
