Malba Tahan, full name Ali Yezzid Izz-Edin ibn-Salim Hanak Malba Tahan, was a fictitious Persian scholar. He was the creation and frequent pen name of Brazilian author Júlio César de Mello e Souza.
According to the dedication and introductory chapters of The Man Who Counted (ostensibly written in the month of Ramadan in the year of the Hijrah 1321, corresponding to November 1903), Malba Tahan was a native and well-connected resident of Baghdad, a sharif (a descendant of Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib), and a hajj (a Muslim who made the pilgrimage to Mecca).
In the year of the Hijrah 1255 1839, Malba Tahan moved to Constantinople with his lifelong friend Beremiz Samir, the namesake of Malba's book The Man Who Counted.

«Biografia: Filho de uma professora e com 11 irmãos, Malba Tahan é na realidade o pseudónimo de Júlio César de Mello e Souza, professor de matemática e possuidor de múltiplos talentos, entre eles o de contador de histórias tradicionais, que foi acima de tudo um pedagogo visionário preocupado em reflectir sobre os métodos de ensino. Dele se diz que, na sala de aula, lembrava um actor empenhado em conquistar plateias e as suas propostas didácticas tinham tanto de ousadas quanto de inovadoras. A Matemática foi o terreno por excelência que escolheu para transmitir conteúdos pedagógicos de forma lúdica e divertida, embora enquanto criança preferisse as letras aos números. Assinando com o seu próprio nome, ou sob o pseudónimo Malba Tahan – que, sem hesitação, poderíamos considerar como um seu heterónimo, tão impressionantemente real foi a existência ficcionada deste duplo autor – Júlio César de Mello e Souza produziu 69 contos e 51 livros de matemática. O interesse despertado por esta obra, expoente máximo que une em perfeita simbiose o mundo das letras e a capacidade narrativa com os números, não cessou desde a sua publicação. Júlio César de Mello e Souza nasceu em 1895, no Rio de Janeiro, e faleceu com 79 anos num hotel do Recife, onde ia dar mais uma conferência, em 1974. » in
