From 1516, Charles I as king of Spain expanded territories in the New World 1556; from 1519 as holy Roman emperor, Charles V in response to the Reformation of Protestants summoned the diet of Worms in 1521 and the council from 1545 of Trent.

From 1521, Francis I waged four wars against Charles V, holy Roman emperor, to 1544.

Charles V ruled until his voluntary retirement and abdication in 1556 in favor of Philip II, his son, and of Ferdinand I, his younger brother.
