“We are taught that the sole purpose of business is to maximize shareholder value. I dispute this premise. Yes, businesses need to be profitable to survive. Without profitability, the business dies. Profitable businesses help communities and the economy. But conscious businesses with conscious cultures include focusing on sustainability, not profitability alone. Conscious and sustainable organizations are those companies that include making a difference for the community at large and being purpose-driven as primary values.
