John Haslett's work has been featured in National Geographic Adventure, Archaeology, QST, and others. In the 1990s, with the help of an isolated community of Ecuadorian mariners, Haslett built four, 30,000-pound wooden rafts, and then voyaged on the Pacific Ocean aboard those primitive vessels for hundreds of days. Haslett was elected to The Explorer's Club in 1998.

Haslett's first book, Voyage of the Manteño, was published by St. Martin's Press in 2006, and has now been retitled The Lost Raft (Great Adventures Press, 2013). His second book, Wilderness Survival, was published in 2009 by Wiley Press, and was named as one of The Top Ten Survival Manuals by LiveStrong.com and others.
