“History is a living entity. Not just because of its survivors, and the stories they have to tell, but because of its enduring power to hurt and to heal, to create even as it destroys, to transform familiar old heroes and monuments into dust even as it raises fresh new icons from the ashes of the lost and the forgotten”

“In Jerusalem, belief as a form of aggression achieved near perfection. Whether you went deep in the earth or climbed the highest hill, someone's faith would track you down, catch you in its sights, and demand that you choose sides.”

Hi, Zoe. Just finished "Let the Great World Spin," and am now working my way through "The Children's Book" by A.S. Byatt (the pace takes some getting used to, but you sink into it pretty deeply and fairly comfortably). In preparation for a trip overseas, am trying to read an appreciable chunk of the Robert Hughes nonfiction opus, "Barcelona." Also hope to read one of Manuel Vazquez Montalban's Pepe Carvalho mysteries (I think they're all set in Barcelona). What about you? Anything you'd highly recommend? My greatest wish is that David Mitchell would publish something new, but with nothing on the horizon I ended up finding a short story of his online, which I think must've been published a few years back in The Guardian.
