English was the only exam paper of Rhys’ where teachers scrawled anything nice in the margins. After school, he decided he might become a full-time novelist. Career advisors and publishers suggested that while his prose wasn't awful, he might need some ‘life experience’ before he had anything interesting to say. To keep the wolf from the door he worked in cafés and restaurants before enrolling in an arts degree at the University of New South Wales.

After graduating with a double major English and Film Studies, he wrote theatre, film and food reviews for various blogs and mastheads. During this time he curated content for brands like Qantas, Dan Murphy’s and Australian First Families of Wine.
