Gorham Dummer Abbott (Andover Theological Seminary, 1831; Bowdoin College) was a Presbyterian minister who later served with the literary department of the American Tract Society. He was among earliest pioneers in the work of higher education for women in America, and a significant influence in the founding of Vassar College in 1861. With his brothers, including Jacob Abbott and John S.C. Abbot, he co-founded Abbott Collegiate Institute for Young Ladies in New York City. ...more
