Rui de Pina (1440-1521) nasceu na Guarda em 1440 e faleceu na mesma cidade em 1522. Foi cronista oficial de D. João II e de D. Manuel I. D. João II nomeou-o diplomata, participando em várias embaixadas à corte de Espanha e ao Vaticano. Foi o embaixador enviado por D. João II a Espanha para negociar o tratado de Tordesilhas, assinado em 1494. Em 1497 é nomeado por D. Manuel cronista-mor e guarda da Torre do Tombo. É acusado de se ter aproveitado de algumas das crónicas desaparecidas de Fernão Lopes.
