| I never did suspend disbelief, the polemics so often more important or at least distracting than the story (which is what some authors choose to do as a strategy), but I did enjoy following through to see where the story would end up. For many people ...more | |

| I loved listening to the audiobook narrated by Adepero Oduye. I checked the book out to listen during a Thanksgiving drive and ended up listening when I got back home until I was done. The story is riveting and so deftly woven to set up a narrative a ...more | |

| I just learned that The Life We Bury is #1 in a series and am very likely to read another. I was riveted by the narrative in this inaugural novel for many reasons, though (for me) the narrative went off the deep end at a certain point (or maybe it di ...more | |

| This is a book, which is an extended eulogy of sorts, I wish I could give six stars. I loved every word of it. Zauner's memoir intertwines so many lessons on family, culture, food love, travel in such an engaging and honest way. I loved hearing her n ...more | |

| I think it is likely that I got so preoccupied finishing up this November book group book, thinking about that future event, that I forgot about the October group meeting that same day (for which I read another great book, Marie Bostwick's The Book C ...more | |

| A friend recommended this book, so I got on the wait list. Once I had it in hand, I could barely let it go to do much else until I finished every page. It is one of the best novels I have read in a long time. I think it will rattle around in my head ...more | |

| I checked out the audiobook of Gilead because I was taking a long road trip and wanted good company. (I did finish it back home because I cannot listen to books in heavy traffic and had to turn it off sometimes.) Tim Jerome becomes the Reverend John ...more | |

| I first read about the Madwomen of Paris on goodreads and finally read it. I cannot say that I could not put it down, but I would seek it out as a contrast to whatever else I was reading, and I liked it very much. Having read more on the clinical and ...more | |

| This is a beautifully written book that will call to you if you need to read it. I think I ran across a shared quotation on social media, likely Facebook, and bought it. It is the sort of book you read and pick up and read again, either snippets or c ...more | |
“Almost Easter
Shaking bone meal
from my bare hands
into the rose bed
where only one bush grows,
I feel as if I’m scattering
my father’s ashes
all over again.
This month marks
the seventh year
my father has lain
in my garden,
his ashes in my hands
still as palpable
as bone meal or thorns.
Easter Sunday,
I will hide an egg
behind his ear.
Jesus will call down to him
to get up and play.
He won’t.
But the rose bush
that is turning green,
this rose will sink its roots
a little deeper in the earth
and in a few months
drop its petals
like so many red tears.
