After dissing the work of academic historians of the Maasai, the authors proceed to draw heavily on these scholarly accounts and archival sources which they also dismiss as false. One would have expected an alternative history, based on fresh research and Maasai oral testimony. But the number of oral testimonies here can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Moreover, much of the book appears to have been written by American students and former students of Poole's, who are not fully credited. (They were in an earlier version of the manuscript, which is how I know how much they contributed.)

Re the first sentence of the blurb: 'Among Western historians, it remains common to deny the historical existence of the Maasai as a people with a dense and complex culture and polity.' This claim is without foundation, and an insult to all scholars who work on Maasai history. One of the authors (Poole) is herself a Western historian. Can she explain where exactly such a denial exists, and who has made it? Why would professional historians set out to deny the historical existence of the people whose history they are studying?!

With respect, Mary Poole is not a 'renowned historian'. There is no evidence that she has ever studied or published on African history, let alone Kenyan or Maasai history. Her PhD was on African-American welfare history. This led to a book, her ONLY scholarly publication. This is an extremely poor record for an academic of such longstanding.

Meitamei Olol Dapash is not a 'prominent Maasai leader'. He has a very small following among local Purko Maasai in Narok County, and has tried and failed many times to get elected to any political office. He calls himself an activist, but it is not clear what activism he currently does. Moreover, he is not a 'professor', although he styles himself as that (shame on Prescott College for conferring this title). If he has a doctorate, pls can he tell us the title of his doctoral dissertation? Where did he obtain his PhD, when, and who was his supervisor? There is zero evidence that he is a scholar at all. It would be more accurate to describe him as a businessman and would-be politician.
