Gregory Gilbert is a professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a research associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panamá. Trained both as a plant pathologist and an evolutionary ecologist, he does research on how fungi and plants interact in tropical rain forests and among the California redwood forests and grasslands. He is an enthusiastic teacher helping students learn through experiential learning outdoors and through genuine scientific inquiry. While writing mostly non-fiction about plant diseases, he prefers reading novels from Latin America and Spain.
