Chicago Illinois Üniversitesinde akademisyen olan Akcan’ın çalışmaları CAA, Getty, Graham, Kress/ARIT, DAAD, Mellon gibi kurumlarca ödüllendirilmiştir. İngilizce ve Türkçe çeşitli dergilerde yayınları ve editörlük çalışmaları, Dolgu İstanbul.

Küresel Şehre Oniki Senaryo adlı bir kitabı bulunmaktadır.
