Michael Alenyikov and 152 other people liked Jim Fonseca's review of Bend Sinister:
Bend Sinister by Vladimir Nabokov
"This novel is an early work by Nabokov, published in 1947, eight years before Lolita. It was published at a time when, the Editor’s Preface tells us, Nabokov was acquiring a reputation among “discerning readers.” The title comes from heraldry meaning" Read more of this review »

The Beautiful Room Is Empty by Edmund White
"The sentences were really sharp and moved the narrative forward. I loved the character of Maria and wanted to see more of her esp as t the end. I'm also interested in the Cold war / USSR theme in this book -- did t expect to find it here, and I find " Read more of this review »
The True True Story of Raja the Gullible by Rabih Alameddine
"I loved all of Alameddine’s previous novels, the stories, characters, his writing and humor. He’s a wonderful writer and I’m reluctant to disrespect or diminish his talent and wit to say I liked but was not as enamored with “The True, True Story of R" Read more of this review »

Beautifully written. I relished the deep dive into the consciousness and emotions of all the characters. Made want to read more of his novels. But it fizzled out near the end. Lazslo's story is compelling but felt disconnected from the others. I real ...more

Tom Perrotta
“Maybe that's what we look for in the people we love, the spark of unhappiness we think we know how to extinguish.”
Tom Perrotta, Election

Gabriel García Márquez
“I discovered that my obsession for having each thing in the right place, each subject at the right time, each word in the right style, was not the well-deserved reward of an ordered mind but just the opposite: a complete system of pretense invented by me to hide the disorder of my nature. I discovered that I am not disciplined out of virtue but as a reaction to my negligence, that I appear generous in order to conceal my meanness, that I pass myself off as prudent because I am evil-minded, that I am conciliatory in order not to succumb to my repressed rage, that I am punctual only to hide how little I care about other people’s time. I learned, in short, that love is not a condition of the spirit but a sign of the zodiac.”
Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Memories of My Melancholy Whores

Bertrand Russell
“To all the talented young men who wander about feeling that there is nothing in the world for them to do, I should say: 'Give up trying to write, and, instead, try not to write. Go out into the world; become a pirate, a king in Borneo, a labourer in Soviet Russia; give yourself an existence in which the satisfaction of elementary physical needs will occupy almost all your energies.' I do not recommend this course of action to everyone, but only to those who suffer from the disease which Mr Krutch diagnoses. I believe that, after some years of such an existence, the ex-intellectual will fin that in spite of is efforts he can no longer refrain from writing, and when this time comes his writing will not seem to him futile.”
Bertrand Russell, The Conquest of Happiness

Franz Kafka
“Don't bend; don't water it down; don't try to make it logical; don't edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.”
Franz Kafka
