John S. Compere, PhD, is a retired Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Professional Speaker who currently lives in Chandler, Arizona, with his wife, Joyce.

Dr. Compere received a BA in English from Mississippi College (1956), a BD in theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1961), an MA in psychology from Wake Forest University (1969) and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina (1972) and subsequently taught psychology at Wake Forest University and Medical School in Winston-Salem, NC, as well as having a private practice as a clinician. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the American Association of Sex Educators, C John S. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. He also was one of the initial consultants at the Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, NC, and from that association, began speaking to corporate and professional conferences on Psychology You Can USE. In 1989, he became a full-time professional speaker and has spoken in 48 states. He was a member of the National Speakers Association and served as the President of the Carolinas Speakers and Integrity. John’s contacts with the secular humanist community since leaving organized religion leads him to conclude that humanists are certainly no less moral than the typical person of faith and in many ways, superior.

The British Methodist minister Leslie Weatherhead (1893-1976) suggested in his book The Christian Agnostic that a person of faith should accept only those aspects of theology which have validated themselves in his/her own experience and that all other claims should be put in a mental drawer labeled “awaiting further light.”

Once John accepted only things that made sense, his mental drawer soon grew to overflowing. He was in a unique position to recognize religious tradition as simply momentum passed down to him from father to son. John found that the ancient superstition that tradition sought to uphold was hollow and shallow in the light of reason.

That is why John entitled his book “Towards the Light.” It is an accurate description of John’s path from being a fifth-generation Baptist minister to being a secular humanist (atheist, if you please, but not an angry one) who rejects the whole idea of the supernatural in favor of science, reason, and being good for goodness sake. Outgrowing religion was a long, difficult, and sometimes painful process for John. It was also unbelievably freeing.

Being good for goodness sake is a great way to live your life! John covets that same freeing experience for every true believer. Throw off the shackles that bound your ancestors and seek the light of reason.
