Evan initially studied Art at Technikon before switching to Graphic Design. With these skills he applied for and got work at Cedara Agricultural College as regional artist. Here he was responsible for the scientist's agricultural displays, which included painting the scenery for their shows and other projects. In need of a bigger salary, he applied for a position at Shuter & Shooter Publishers. Initially he had the dual function of being responsible for the computer network and laying out a book or two. As the burden of IT management started imposing on the creative impact he clearly had in the Publishing Department, he soon became a full-time graphic designer, especially as more and more books were being produced.
