At restaurants and other public places, random strangers asked Charlie, “What’s going on with that hostage situation in Virginia?” or “Who’s behind those killings in Washington?” Instead of explaining that law enforcement isn’t like Starbucks where everybody wearing a uniform all knows what each other is doing, he’d tell stories.

Sometimes he’d relate a similar event that had happened to him. Other times, he’d simply re-enact a few minutes of his day at work. Most often, the room went quiet, strangers put other conversations on hold and everyone listened. Who doesn’t love real-life cop stories?
