Shales is an accomplished artist, essayist, art theorist and historian. He holds a Bachelor of Arts- Latin and Greek from Wesleyan University, a Masters of Fine Arts from Hunter College and a Doctorate from Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture. He has taught at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and currently teaches at MassArt.
