My Verdict: There was no way I could have prepared for this gonzo, gloopy massacre

Piñata, the first of Favro’s books I read, is fairly notorious. After I pored over its pages, the reason why it had a reputation was obvious. Despite the story still being among the most disturbing things I have ever read, Favro’s follow-up, AFLOCKAPOCALYPSE!, came out right on the heels of when I finished it, so I picked up the new book and read it not long after.
It’s been months. I’ve meant to review it. I haven’t known what to say. I still don’t. I liked it. That part is simple enough. It was over the top…but that’s not it. Every bit as messed up as Piñata, yet with a different flavor. I finally wanted to start my review when I realized what felt so weird about this bird-book-of-utter-doom. Piñata was disturbing because it genuinely made you feel like you had stepped into (and gotten lost in) the mind of someone who’d gone completely mad, whereas with AFLOCKAPOCALYPSE!, you feel as if the madness has gotten into you.
The story starts with Diego, smack dab in the middle of a trek through the jungle. He made the trip to find his roots. He gets his wish in spectacular fashion when he becomes the center of an important ritual. He is held captive and fed copious amounts of drugs to open him up to receive the spirit of an ancient avian deity.
There is a brief moment where it is unclear to what extent the things Diego experienced were real. He awakens at home. His wife is there. So is the BIRD GOD. So…
It feels weird to keep comparing AFLOCKAPOCALYPSE! with Piñata, yet their levels of psychological mayhem are so matched that their differences shine, which makes them wonderful foils for one another. See, where Piñata felt mostly personal and included the outside world less often (till the end), AFLOCKAPOCLYPSE! exists on a much grander scale overall, with fewer moments of the more internal or personal horror.
However, all the stuff with Rosie, Diego’s wife, is an exception to the rule. It was gloopy, intense, and gross (obviously), yet the personal, primal ID of it all, coursing through those scenes, really got under my skin. I could feel my reptilian (avian?) brain waking up and starting to agree (Gollum voice), “Yes, must use the juices to make more brood!” Don’t even get me started on corkscrews and eggs. Oh, God! The eggs!
By the time the military got involved, and things went to Avengers Endgame levels of over-the-top-bird-based-gore-horror, you could count me all in. The thing isn’t called AFLOCKANICELUNCHDATE. It is not called AFLOCKAWAR, even. The book is called what it is called, and I am telling you, Favro delivers.
If you like extreme horror at all, especially the over-the-top, bizarro kind, I would check out AFLOCKAPOCALYPSE! For fun. Just don’t act surprised if it gets under your skin and makes you feel a little sick here and there while exploring infinite bird rage. It’s a great read that I finished mostly in one sitting. Parts reminded me of An American Werewolf in London if you gave that movie steroids. Or maybe like…what if Dead Alive-era Peter Jackson teamed up with Robert Eggers to make a mashup of Cannibal Holocaust and Hitchcock’s Birds from the birds’ point of view? ...more

The second book I read by Dark hit me in ways I did not expect. While I enjoyed A Christmas Queef for its humorous take on the kills and its surprising amount of heart, When I Die is an entirely different animal. The tone is so much grittier and more brutal. While parts of Queef were sad, the overall tone felt triumphant when we saw some very bad people get their just deserts, whereas When I Die feels utterly devastating.
I often start these reviews with a personal anecdote about how I came to find the story or when a piece piqued my interest. However, this little tale is simple. I had already read one of Dark’s books, and I had a fun time, so when I saw the bloody cover for When I Die, followed by its glowing (and disgusted) reviews, I pretty much had to check it out.
If you consider yourself a writer or are aware of various bits of writing advice floating around out there, you’re probably familiar with the idea writers shouldn’t be doing prologues or epilogues anymore. It is a bit of free advice thrown out on the internet pretty regularly as though it is sage wisdom passed down from the ages. “Cut the prologue,” they say. While that may be generally true of many writers and many stories for a host of many legitimate reasons, the prologue and the epilogue in When I Die just hit different.
The opening prologue is a close third-person perspective of a woman driving out to a vacation cabin in the woods with one daughter. Her husband and their other daughter are still at home while he finishes a work project. He intends to follow them out to their secluded cabin once he finishes. Sounds idyllic, right?
Well, the woman doesn’t seem to know the cabin’s location, the weather conditions are highly unfavorable, and she is lost with her daughter on some backroad deep in the woods. To make things worse, the engine just started smoking, threatening to give out on her. That’s exactly how the prologue ends, with the two of them stranded in the woods in a broken-down car.
The book switches to a different character’s first-person perspective when we move into the story proper and so leaves our little opening on a cliffhanger. I found it really engaging. Somehow, without ever explicitly telling me, Dark made me understand that this poor woman had found herself in way more danger than she realized. Somehow, I just knew we had a Wrong Turn or Chainsaw Massacre-esque family living in them-there woods. Again, this wasn’t explicitly said, yet the atmosphere was so tight and foreboding, there was no way it wasn’t that.
The rest of the story focuses on our main character, Jamie, and is told from her perspective. I want to warn anyone who hasn’t read any extreme horror or splatterpunk: the rest of this book = absolutely brutal. Everything the prologue left to your imagination, the rest of the book will shove in your face so hard it lulls you into a hazed dissociation. I swear this book is up there with any of the other most disturbing books you’ve ever read.
Jamie has belonged to an owner, Hank, ever since she can remember. Hank and his network of diabolical men in town have some very specific hobbies and business practices that can only take place when there's lots of seclusion. Let’s just say my intuitions about cannibal murderers and such were right on the money.
Hank and his pals also like to participate in all kinds of foul activities before they turn their prey into ground beef, the kind that I won't detail here. Suffice it to say, the content could end up in some redacted files. They “spared” poor Jamie, and instead of turning her into meat like the rest, Hank and his cohorts kept her as their pet. They raised her into this lifestyle. It is the only thing she has ever known.
The story from her point of view is told with unflinching directness. She’s clearly desensitized and has even been conditioned with some of the same sick tastes as her captors. She knows it’s wrong, and she hates herself for enjoying it, yet she knows no other way. The story, by putting you in her shoes, dares you to eroticize the violence, yet never backs away from how awful it all is.
Everything goes off the rails when Hank and his lackey bring home a new woman. Jamie thinks of her as the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. Things go completely off the rails from here. Jamie’s obsession with the new woman grows, and she begins to have ideas about how she can make things better for her and her new friend.
Right when things take a turn for the worse, something happens where I finally thought, “Ok, maybe there is some relief in the future for these poor characters.” No, Dark doesn’t let you off so easily. Jamie can’t help herself from re-enacting everything she has learned.
Honestly, considering the foul subject matter of this book, I most often felt an aching sadness for Jamie. Yes, she had monstrous tendencies, but it wasn’t her fault. This book is a gritty and nauseating portrayal of some of the worst that humanity has to offer, yet Dark made me feel deeply sympathetic for the main character. In a book like this, that is no easy task.
Now to talk about the ending. I am not going to say much. I don’t want to spoil it for you. If you’re into extreme horror and you haven’t read this yet, I think you probably should. The story itself would be reason enough. This thing is super bleak, yet by the last chapter, there’s a sliver of hope that feels needed after being beaten senseless with abuse and violence. That sliver of hope would have been a fine note to end on.
Then I read the epilogue. When I say it knocked the wind out of me and then had me screaming, “NO WAY!” I am not exaggerating. This is one of the best end-reveals I have read in a while. It felt perfectly earned. Every clue was there. Felt perfectly justifiable why the reveal didn’t come sooner. It completely recontextualizes the rest of the story the way a good reveal should and simultaneously makes everything you already thought was bad THAT MUCH WORSE. Awful. Shocking. Disgusting.
Chef’s kiss. Très magnifique. This book is absolutely disgusting. I liked it way more than I should have.
Last thing. Before I go. Big props to the writing in this thing. It’s funny to see such awful subject matter written so competently and polished so well. Dark did a bang-up job, and the editing by Chisto Healy makes the whole thing shine, so all the gore and filth hit so much harder.

My Verdict: A harrowing journey through abuse and cathartic revenge.

While I love writing my little rants about the books I’ve read, I have learned I can’t really commit to ARC reviews. My reading habits are odd. I don’t read as regularly as I should so much as I hit the pages in hardcore sprints when the mood strikes me. In addition to strange reading rituals, my memory simply isn’t what it used to be. All this is to say sorry to the author for not reading the book and posting a review much sooner. I feel I have started more than one review this way.
If it is any consolation to Ruzsa, I had forgotten that I committed to an ARC review and had a digital copy waiting in my inbox. I have bought two physical copies on my own volition since making said commitment (I gifted the paperback to a friend and got myself the hardcover). Once I realized I had not fulfilled my ARC review duty, I Hope You Have Nightmares About Me shot to the top of my mutant TBR list.
I knew going in the story focused on enduring abuse and getting revenge. Seeing jerks get their comeuppance is always satisfying, so the book had my interest right away. However, I forgot something about stories like these. You often must endure the abuse before you get to the cathartic bits.
I Hope You Have Nightmares About Me is a harrowing book. The chapters detailing accounts of living through torment after torment are the most gut-wrenching of the bunch. No supernatural horror element here, just the awful, real things that men do.
Despite the discomfort I felt while reading some of these passages, I have a feeling Ruzsa was still taking it easy on us. None of it comes off as terribly graphic or exploitative. The author keeps it all tasteful, yet the emotional impact still hits.
One particular scene felt so awful. The main character has just fled an awful situation and is seeking help or refuge of any kind from her neighbors, which had me thinking of the moment in the original Halloween where Laurie Strode is running from house to house, screaming for help, only to have porch lights turn off on her (the scariest scene in the movie, by the way). Somehow, what happened in this book outshines that scene in cruelty while staying just as grounded and believable.
When the supernatural finally comes into play, you don’t feel fear. The story finally brings relief. The main character becomes empowered to get her bloody revenge, and by that point, you’re more than ready for some retaliation.
The story had a cool approach around character and perspective. Nearly every chapter changes character perspectives or character focus in some way. There is a distinct shift from the early first-person chapters into third-person, which happens at a very interesting moment. In fact, the story features more than one main character (though their stories echo each other’s in terrible ways). Add in the occasional modern epistolary chapter featuring true crime blogs for flavor.
Considering how Ruzsa packed all this into a relatively short length, you can see how the book never failed to keep me reading. The chapters felt relatively punchy and impactful while always shifting in style, not leaving much time to get bored. I would have read it in one sitting had I not started it late on a lunch break.
If I Hope You Have Nightmares About Me sounds like something you would like, I would go check it out now. Possible minor spoilers ahead, so stop if you haven’t read the story yet. Ok, bye.
So, I only have one problem with the book. It’s a really petty problem. It's probably just a matter of preference.
Here I go.
I like the title of the book. I love the way Ruzsa employs the line at the very end of the story (in the blood graffiti), which acts as a nice stinger to wrap everything up and enforce the idea the title implies. However, the phrase shows up a couple times too many. Specifically, when the characters say, “I hope you have nightmares about me,” right before they kill someone.
Listen, it’s a sick one-liner to throw out before ending a dude, I will give it that. However, you can hope all you want, and they still won’t have those nightmares. They are dead now. You killed them.
Unless, of course, the inner rules of the narrative sort of treat the death state like a dream state, which I guess it does. Or perhaps Ruzsa is using the characters to say the phrase directly to anybody reading who needs to be haunted by it.
