Until two days ago, I was a self-proclaimed ‘night owl’ who regularly went to sleep at 2- 3 am. Each day would start with the declaration, ‘I hate mornings!’ Shortly, morning coffee would follow, which I would drink like mother’s milk several times a day until 5.30 pm. Breakfast and lunch would get skipped, and I would only eat dinner. But then the regular 10 pm munchies would arrive (usually sated by cheese and bickies). So, when I saw ‘Own Your Morning’ I downloaded it onto my Kindle, praying it offered a solution to help me overcome these terrible habits. Stay tuned for the result further down.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a total train wreck. I exercise my body by playing tennis five days a week (three mornings and two afternoons) at the club where I am the vice president and exercise my mind by playing trivia and board games. Along with that, I read at least four books a week (this being one of them), enjoy writing daily and study. I run a social group and volunteer in the community with Neighbourhood Watch, my body corporate, and help with community lunches.

Now you need to understand that I’m a person who has a routine. Just a really bad one. On my tennis mornings, I would get up at 9 am, put on the kettle to boil water for my coffee while I got dressed in my tennis gear. I would then gulp down my coffee and charge out of the house. It makes sense that I always feel best on my three morning tennis days, as I get my dose of sunlight within that first hour. But on those other days, I would sleep as long as I could, usually not surfacing until 11-11.30 am.

‘Own Your Mornings’ talks of the jetlag effect, and I totally get it. Because my bad habits keep me up late, I would struggle on my tennis mornings to surface. Thus, the regular ‘I hate mornings!’ mantra.

Sometimes, because I have lived for so long with a poor sleep routine and little fuel, I feel amazed I functioned as well as I did, but I know I am slowly destroying myself with my bad habits. And this wonderful book has literally changed me before I had even finished reading it.

As I lay in bed that first night, the bit about setting a sleep time and wake-up time that allows me to have a healthy start to my day and in that moment, I decided, this is it—time to form some new habits. At 12.30 pm, I put down my Kindle and instead of 9 am, I set my alarm for 8.30 am to give me that extra half an hour I needed to do all the stuff the book recommends.

I lay in bed setting my intention for the next day as the book advised and felt excited about a new start. At 8.30 am, I surfaced feeling fairly well rested after a proper eight hours of sleep. I drank a glass of water and dressed. I then went outside to get some sunlight and ended up picking up autumn leaves to toss into my green bin. It was then back into the house for a porridge breakfast. I did have my coffee a little earlier than the hour because I hadn’t got to that part of the book yet, but this morning I did almost the same as the above, but I went for a walk around the block and waited until 9.30 for my coffee. Journaling also happened on both days. I am also eating a healthy lunch and, for the past two days, have had no 10 pm munchies cravings. Bonus!

So, two days in, I can report that I am feeling good, excited with my decision and plan to stick it out for the thirty days to turn this process into my new normal. Oh, and that Sacred Five task got me working on a project I have been procrastinating over, so yay for that! Who knows, I might end up so inspired that I will write my own book about the experience, and if I do, I’ll give this book a plug.

For anyone like me who wants to transform from a night owl to a morning person and for some game-changing personal development recommendations, this is exactly the book you need.

Initially, I felt a tad reluctant to grab a 500-page-plus book about veganism, but the product images of the recipes looked enticing, so I thought, ‘I feel intrigued. Let’s have a look.’ And I am so glad that I did.

I had a crack at being a vegetarian from early 2017 until near the end of 2018, and I found the process frustrating mainly because I am a terrible cook and a social butterfly who ate out at bistros a couple of nights a week for trivia nights where the vegetarian meal options were only risotto or pasta. I was like, ‘Where are the vegetables? These options are so unhealthy and bland!’ It is therefore easy to understand why vegetarianism/veganism can end up being very unhealthy if you go SAD (Standard American Diet, but I live in Australia, so the acronym can still work).

Bill Rennie does a wonderful, detailed job of explaining why a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle can become an epic failure for those who don’t do it right. I suspect I was one of those people because my energy levels were awful while I tried to be ‘good’ until I cracked and let meat back into my life. But lately, I have noticed I had been going the other way and eating too much meat and not enough vegetables, so I was keen to get a book that showed me tasty but healthy options to encourage me to put more veggies on my plate.

I would say to anyone who grabs this, don’t give up on the read halfway through, because the first half of the book is about educating you on recommended plant foods and their health benefits. I found it quite fascinating, but I will admit to wondering when the recipes would show up. However, when they did, I was lying in bed at 1 am, salivating, thinking about all the things I could do to my boring porridge to jazz it up. Then there were the curries. I LOVE a curry, and I mentally assessed my pantry and realised I had those spices hiding within.

I will be trying a bunch of these recipe ideas, such as the Thai Vegetable Curry, the Chana Masala, the Eggplant Teriyaki and the Five-Spice Stir Fry. I have just started embracing rice and veggies again, so I am keen to get ideas for more interesting meals, ensuring that I hit the ‘6 F’s of Sustainable Eating’ to avoid feeling tempted to add meat.

For anyone considering veganism, I would highly recommend reading this book to learn the right way to undertake the challenge. I also like the author’s honesty in encouraging the taking of certain supplements, ensuring all nutritional bases get covered.

As a notorious plant killer from way back to where I even ‘released’ a nearly dead house plant into the wild by shedding its pot prison and planting it in a nice spot to potentially survive in the wilderness well away from its incompetent mother (really need to check on that plant—hope the poor little guy made it), I find the idea of growing plants hydroponically without soil intriguing.

My husband was once a farmer, and although he specialised in cattle until he sold out and retired, he dabbled in growing potatoes, which was a monumental disaster, as he leaned into that idea during Victoria, Australia’s millennium drought. Bugs were also a major issue. Thus, the venture became the crop that never happened. From the stories he told me of that time before we met, I understand how difficult it is for little farmers trying to compete with industrial farms. It is no wonder that they are a dying breed and are aging out, as Arthur Comer shares in ‘Growing Forward.’

I enjoyed learning about hydroponics and the potential benefits to the community, as even those who live in apartments and other small spaces can start hydroponics as a hobby, with lettuce, kale, spinach or basil recommended for beginners, creating a mini garden in their home. For those seeking a second income, there is potential for the super keen to scale up their hobby into a business selling to local markets, restaurants and stores.

Comer feels hydroponics is a positive way forward. He believes it is a way to bring communities together to create healthy food sources in urban areas, particularly when the quality of stock from local retailers is low. The book reads well and has engaging images that could inspire readers to try hydroponics.

Although in theory I like the idea of having a mini garden at home and growing fresh veggies and herbs, this plant killer feels it is better to leave this hobby to those with a green thumb. However, I would consider the idea in the event of a future apocalypse, when popping down to the corner shop for my greens was no longer an option.
