My goodness, this one brought on the tears. By the end of chapter eleven, I was sobbing so hard I could barely breathe. It evoked so many memories within me of my last months with my father.

I was fortunate that my father’s decline, which robbed him of his independence, only lasted five months. It was also fortunate that I could get him placed into a high-care nursing home quickly so he could have the round-the-clock care he needed. I can’t imagine handling his needs without help, particularly when we lived nearly 2,000 kilometres apart, and I had to fly back and forth between business commitments to spend time with him.

The bit where Pomita loses her patience when her father repeatedly asks the same question reminded me of my father’s mental decline when he kept asking me for the TV remote he was holding.

First, I said, ‘It’s in your hand, Dad.’

He asked for it again, so I repeated, ‘It’s in your hand, Dad.’

When he asked me for it yet again, I clearly remember saying, ‘For the third time, IT’S IN YOUR HAND, DAD!’

My father immediately teared up and said, ‘Don’t yell at me.’

I was in tears then and felt like the world’s worst daughter for losing it at this darling man who I loved with all my heart. I could imagine the rollercoaster of emotions Pomita must have suffered, because my journey with Dad’s mental and physical decline was short, and I had help. Poor Pomita soldiered on alone for so long, even having to deal with the horrors of COVID and the lockdowns. What a nightmare but what a daughter!

There was never a second of doubt that I would be five-starring this book. I knew it a few chapters in as my heart raced and memories surfaced from my end. I felt a kindred soul who seemed like me in so many ways – I loved Enid Blyton and comic books as well, and I was also a solitary soul. And like Pomita, I was my dad’s daughter. We were so alike.

After I finished reading this in one sitting, I lay in bed and said a silent prayer that my husband and I would remain in perfect health until God decided it was time to take us. If I had one wish for all living creatures, that’s what it would be.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough, but make sure you have some tissues handy. You will definitely need them. ...more

This book dredged up many memories for me of when my mother called me with the awful news that my father had cancer in 1991. It was lymphoma, and he went into remission after his treatments in 1992, but the cancer reappeared in 1993, and the awful rollercoaster ride began again. He beat that one as well.

In the meantime, Mum lived in constant fear of losing Dad and the cancer returning, until in 2000, she developed pancreatic cancer. With only a five percent survival rate, the prognosis was grim, and the disease took her five months later. I still remember the second-hand angst of that period, where I felt stuck in limbo and helpless.

Then poor Dad suffered another cancer in 2005. This time it was a skin tumour. The specialist presented the daunting prospect of cutting half his face away, and I still remember my father saying to me after we left that consultation, ‘No way. I’m not going through that. I would rather die.’ And I remember agreeing with him, knowing I would feel exactly the same way in his position. We were alike, my father and I.

So, my father went down the radiotherapy route, and although he successfully killed the tumour, the therapy debilitated him so much that he ended up in care, and a bout of pneumonia took him at the end of February 2006.

More recently, I lost a close friend of eighteen years to glioblastoma and being so close in age to me, the feeling of my mortality really hit home. I couldn’t imagine how difficult it must have been for him, knowing that he was going to die and there was little he could do about it. He was actually quite inspirational. After his one and only surgery to remove the tumour, he played tennis, went to trivia, socialised, got himself everywhere on public transport because he could no longer drive, and remained positive right until the cancer returned and finally took him down on the 1st April this year.

Losing my good friend so recently and in this way is why I grabbed this book. I am also near the age when cancer first struck my family, and although I have done everything I can to live a healthy life and didn’t smoke as both my parents did, I want to be prepared just in case.

The book is a personal journey of the author’s father’s battle with cancer. It covers the various emotions experienced during this difficult time, but also gives you an appreciation for life, the importance of keeping stress levels low, staying positive, maintaining connections with those you care about, and the value of every precious second of good health we have.

‘Living with Cancer’ is not so much a medical book giving you intricate details about the cancer suffered, apart from a brief mention that it might have had something to do with the lungs. Nor will it describe any of the treatments. It is more about the emotional journey, which is supportive, biographical and real. It’s a lovely read about a sad subject, and bringing this story to print is a wonderful, memorable tribute from a daughter to her father that she can share for generations to come. ...more
