Q&A with author Pam Stucky

Q: How long did this book take to write?

A:
That’s one of the questions people ask me most often, which surprises me! At any rate, there’s not a simple answer to that question. Back in 2002, I worked at an environmental consulting company, with scientists who would go out into the field on various jobs. One day, a wetlands scientist came back from a trip to Whittier, Alaska. He came into my office Read more of this blog post »

“It's curious that I can't stomach half an hour of television, in general, but I can spend the better half of an hour watching water fall from the heavens. Why do you suppose that is?”
Pam Stucky, Letters from Wishing Rock: a novel with recipes

“Sometimes I like to come sit down here, by myself, when the library is closed," Megan said quietly. "Even though I have a really nice apartment upstairs, there's just something comforting about being in the library. All of humanity is here," she said, looking around at the stacks of books. "Every pain a person has ever endured, every joy, everything anyone has ever felt, it's in here. When I'm here with all these thoughts, I never feel alone. When I'm here, I always know that others have gone through worse, and survived.”
Pam Stucky, Final Chapter: A Megan Montaigne Mystery

“I read voraciously as a kid. And one day, I realized that in books, everything is possible." Megan pictured in her mind the library beneath them, its rows upon rows of books "You know how science fiction movies have mad scientists who keep endless jars of brains in some secret back room? Well, if you think about it, what you have down there--" she inclined her head in the direction of the library "--is a room full of brains. Every book is someone's brain. When I read a book, I'm basically reading someone's mind. Not their thoughts exactly, but you get an idea of their worldview, or at the very least, you get an idea of their understanding of humans. When I was a kid, it felt like that helped. I could understand the characters in books because I knew their motives. Books helped me figure people out." She laughed. "I guess. Or maybe they're just a good escape. But, I mean, libraries include everything we can think of in the universe. All possibilities. If someone has imagined it, it's in a library. That's pretty amazing.”
