A chief petty officer and decoder for the U.S. Navy during World War II for naval intelligence in Washington, she later served in the Navy Reserves. She did her undergraduate work at Ohio State University and later received her master's degree from the University of Texas, where she also did doctoral studies. She taught business at Southern Illinois University.

She was the author the book "An Hour Is Forever," published by Avon Publishing Co. In England the book was published under the title "Fire." She also co-authored two other books and had articles published in the Reader's Digest, the New York Times and business journals.
