John M. Dow was born in a small mining community in central Scotland and, other than a short stay in Australia, has lived there ever since.

His life to date has been split evenly between writing and technology. His technology career pays the bills and the writing keeps him sane.

To date, he has published reviews and articles for computing and video game magazines, as well as short stories.

From Within is his first novel; a dark and frantic homage to the horror fiction of the 1970s and 1980s.

His second novel, Careless Talk, is a dark fantasy documenting a conflict between immortals. The events therein stretch from ancient Babylon to the modern day. Careless Talk is the first volume of a series called The Ciriath Cycle.

His preferred genres are d

The Cost of a Life

To coincide with this year's NanoWriMo, I'll be starting on the first third of The Cost of a Life (The Ciriath Cycle #2) on the 1st November. The storyline is looking good so far – spread over three 'acts' of around 50,000 words each. If I make it through the first act, 'The Dropped Stitch' in November and then sustain that pace, we could be looking at a springtime release.

There's an interesting n

Samuel Taylor Coleridge
“Like one, that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And having once turned round walks on,
And turns no more his head;
Because he knows, a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.”
Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Tomi Adeyemi
“But worst of all is the freckled girl. A Cancer. A harbinger of death. Dark green clouds of disease spew from her hands. With one breath, the soldiers’ bodies seize.”
Tomi Adeyemi, Children of Blood and Bone

Markus Zusak
“The suffering faces of depleted men and women reached across to them, pleading not so much for help – they were beyond that – but for an explanation. Just something to subdue this confusion.”
Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

Frank Patrick Herbert
“There is in all things a pattern that is part of our universe. It has symmetry, elegance, and grace—those qualities you find always in that which the true artist captures. You can find it in the turning of the seasons, in the way sand trails along a ridge, in the branch clusters of the creosote bush or the pattern of its leaves. We try to copy these patterns in our lives and our society, seeking the rhythms, the dances, the forms that comfort. Yet, it is possible to see peril in the finding of ultimate perfection. It is clear that the ultimate pattern contains its own fixity. In such perfection, all things move toward death.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

James Maxwell
“Sometimes there are leaders who work to do good in the world,” she said. “Brave men whose values are more important to them than doing what they think people want and expect of them. Then there are other leaders. They come to power because they inherited it or because their supporters are more vocal, more violent, and more intimidating than those who just want to live their lives.”
James Maxwell, The Hidden Relic

Yeah, I was beginning to suspect they'd need a second reading - there's a -lot- going on! I'm really taking my time as there are a lot areas (particularly where Tyrion I concerned) that require a bit of thought.

John Dow Hrm. My self-set goal of 100 books read in 2011 isn't going so well. I'm currently on number 42. Probably down to the number of Stephen King tomes I've waded through :)
