Christopher Kline lived in the Rim Country of Arizona for ten years where he worked as a school teacher, butterfly researcher, and yes, a U.S. Geological Survey field biologist. Much of his intimate knowledge of the region comes from hiking its many trails, including a sixty mile, five day backpacking trip of the General Crook Trail with his daughter. Kline's interest in writing started in elementary school, with creative writing and science being his favorite subjects. After studying forestry at Northern Arizona University, many of Kline's work assignments placed him in the outdoors. Over the years he journaled about many of his adventures. While Kline still enjoys being in the outdoors, his interests have broadened. He now includes, in ad ...more

Asclepias oenotheroides

In my new book Asclepias, character Cliff House takes Tony to the location of a new species of milkweed recently discovered in Arizona.  The new milkweed is called Asclepias oenotheroides, also Yerba de Zizotes.  This story is actually true, except rather than the fictional Cliff House discovering the new species, it was the real Christopher Kline.  Asclepias oenotheroides had been found once in A Read more of this blog post »

Edward Abbey
“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.”
Edward Abbey

“The tragedy of modern war is that the young men die fighting each other - instead of their real enemies back home in the capitals. ”

“The best thing about graduating from the university was that I finally had time to sit on a log and read a good book.”
